SEAG transfer preparation

Small steps towards a big next chapter. Thoughtful English and maths preparation for the SEAG Entrance Assessment that builds understanding as well as confidence.

Understanding first.
Confidence follows.

The SEAG Entrance Assessment is the transfer test used by grammar schools across Northern Ireland. It is two papers, sat on two Saturday mornings in November of P7, and every question is drawn from the Key Stage 2 curriculum in English and maths. We prepare children for exactly that: the content, the question styles, the answer sheets and the pace, in a way that keeps them curious rather than anxious. Gaps are found early and parents hear what to practise, so time at home has a clear purpose.

  • Reading comprehension, spelling, punctuation and grammar
  • Number, shape, measures and handling data
  • Practice papers in the SEAG format, at the real pace
  • A calm, positive approach to the test weeks

WHAT WE COVER

Everything the two papers can ask.

The assessment stays inside the Key Stage 2 curriculum, so we teach the whole of it rather than guessing at questions.

Reading comprehension

  • Fiction, non-fiction and poetry passages
  • Finding information and reading between the lines
  • Working out what a word means from its context
  • Why the writer chose a word, a picture or a structure
  • Answering in full sentences when a written answer is asked for

Spelling, punctuation and grammar

  • Spelling patterns, tricky words and homophones
  • Capital letters, commas, apostrophes and speech marks
  • Word classes, tenses and sentence types
  • Spotting the one mistake in a line of text
  • Choosing the best word to complete a sentence

Number and calculation

  • Place value into the millions and decimals
  • Mental and written methods for all four operations
  • Fractions, decimals and percentages, and moving between them
  • Factors, multiples, primes, squares and sequences
  • Rounding, estimating and checking an answer makes sense

Shape, space and measures

  • Properties of 2D and 3D shapes, angles and symmetry
  • Coordinates, reflections and translations
  • Perimeter, area and volume
  • Length, mass, capacity and converting between units
  • Time, timetables and money problems

Handling data

  • Reading tables, bar charts, line graphs and pie charts
  • Mean, mode, median and range
  • Sorting with Venn and Carroll diagrams
  • The language of probability

Technique and pace

  • Multi-step word problems, broken into steps
  • Reading the question twice, then every option
  • Using the answer sheet without losing a line
  • Timed practice papers, including the free official ones
  • What to do when a question looks unfamiliar
HOW THE WEEKS WORK

What we do, every week.

  • Small groups by stage, so P6 and P7 children work at the right level
  • One session a week, with a quieter start for younger children
  • Practice papers in the SEAG format under timed conditions as November approaches
  • Short, focused homework with the answers explained the following week
  • Progress updates for parents through private, secure links
  • A calm approach to the test weeks, with no late surprises
WHAT PROGRESS LOOKS LIKE

What families usually notice.

  • A steady routine for practice at home
  • Familiarity with the shape and pace of assessment questions
  • Clear feedback on the two or three things to work on next
FROM OUR FAMILIES

In their words.

Both my children have been to Sumkids in preparation for AQE. They actually looked forward to going. I could see their confidence grow each week. Nothing is too much trouble and always at the end of the phone for help and reassurance. Highly recommended.

Wendy Allen Parent review on our original website

Fantastic tuition from a qualified and caring professional. Sumkids supports each child regardless of their ability, builds knowledge and most of all increases the child's confidence. My child couldn't wait to get each week. Many thanks Corrina.

Greg Laird Parent review on our original website

Corrina, thank you and the team so much. Amy Wilson scored 117 in the AQE and loves maths now too as an added bonus.
