GCSE maths tuition

Make maths make sense. CCEA GCSE Mathematics taught topic by topic, with the method and the reason behind it, so your child walks into the exam hall ready.

Understanding first.
Confidence follows.

Most schools in Northern Ireland enter pupils for CCEA GCSE Mathematics, so that is the specification we teach to: its units, its tiers, its calculator and non-calculator papers and its grades from A* to G. If your child's school uses Edexcel or AQA instead, tell us at the first conversation and we will work from that specification. Whether a pupil needs to rebuild the foundations or push for the top grades, we work on understanding the method and the reason behind it, then practise it on real exam questions until it is secure.

  • Number, algebra and graphs
  • Geometry, measures and trigonometry
  • Statistics and probability
  • Past papers, exam technique and revision plans

WHAT WE COVER

The whole specification, topic by topic.

Everything CCEA can examine, grouped the way the papers group it. Higher Tier topics are included for pupils aiming at the top grades.

  • Fractions, decimals and percentages, including percentage change and reverse percentages
  • Ratio, proportion and best-buy problems
  • Factors, multiples, primes, HCF and LCM
  • Indices, standard form and surds
  • Rounding, estimation and upper and lower bounds
  • Money and everyday maths: interest, bills and exchange rates

Algebra

  • Simplifying, expanding and factorising expressions
  • Linear equations, inequalities and simultaneous equations
  • Quadratic equations by factorising, the formula and completing the square
  • Sequences and the nth term
  • Formulae: substituting, rearranging and writing your own
  • Algebraic fractions, functions and iteration at Higher Tier

Graphs

  • Coordinates, straight lines, gradients and intercepts
  • Quadratic, cubic and reciprocal graphs
  • Real-life graphs: distance-time, conversion and rates of change

  • Transformations of graphs at Higher Tier

Geometry and measures

  • Angles in triangles, polygons and on parallel lines
  • Perimeter, area and volume, including circles, cylinders, cones and spheres
  • Pythagoras and trigonometry, with the sine and cosine rules at Higher Tier
  • Similar and congruent shapes, scale and bearings
  • Transformations: reflection, rotation, translation and enlargement
  • Constructions, loci and circle theorems
  • Units, compound measures such as speed and density, and vectors

Handling data

  • Collecting data, sampling and questionnaires
  • Bar charts, pie charts, scatter graphs and lines of best fit
  • Mean, median, mode and range from lists and frequency tables
  • Cumulative frequency, box plots and histograms
  • Probability, tree diagrams, Venn diagrams and expected outcomes

Exam craft

  • Reading the question and spotting what it is really asking
  • Showing working that earns method marks even when the answer slips
  • Calculator skills, and knowing what the non-calculator paper expects
  • Timing, checking and what to do with a question you cannot start
  • Past papers and mark schemes, so pupils know how marks are given
  • A revision timetable built around the topics that carry the most marks
HOW THE WEEKS WORK

What we do, every week.

  • Small groups arranged by tier and target grade
  • One session a week with a clear focus, following the school's order of topics where it helps
  • Short homework from past papers, marked with feedback on method as well as answers
  • Mock papers under exam conditions before each exam series
  • Progress notes shared with parents through private, secure links
  • Honest advice on tier entry, unit timing and resits
WHAT PROGRESS LOOKS LIKE

What families usually notice.

  • Gaps in the foundations identified and closed
  • A revision plan built around the topics that carry the most marks
  • Confidence reading a question and choosing a method
FROM OUR FAMILIES

In their words.

Fantastic tuition from a qualified and caring professional. Sumkids supports each child regardless of their ability, builds knowledge and most of all increases the child's confidence. My child couldn't wait to get each week. Many thanks Corrina.
